Journalist's father fatally shot, worker wounded

BUKIT MERTAJAM: The father of a Guang Ming Daily journalist was shot dead at the Taman Sejahtera Jaya Flats here late Friday night.

State CID chief SAC Mazlan Kesah said the incident took place at 11pm, after victim Yeap Cheng Chye went to the flats to deliver some crockery to a worker after closing his chicken rice shop.

"Two men on a motorcycle turned up and both shot at Yeap four times. They also shot his worker who was standing nearby, twice," he said on Saturday.

Yeap, 47, father of 22-year-old journalist Gary Yeap, was bleeding profusely and died at the scene of the incident.

His worker Loh Siau Kee, 42, was shot in her left shoulder and stomach.

Mazlan said the police was studying the modus operandi of the case and urged those with information to contact the authorities.

"The motive of the murder is still unknown because valuables and a wallet belonging to the victim were not touched," he said.

He said both the suspects were said to be wearing dark jackets and full-face helmets.

He said the case was investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code which provides for a mandatory death sentence if found guilty. - Bernama
