Pahang may reconsider raw water supply agreement with Selangor

BENTONG: The Pahang government will consider cancelling the raw water supply agreement with Selangor if the latter continues to politicise the issue.
Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said he had instructed his officials to conduct a thorough study on the terms and conditions of the agreement, including the price mechanism.
"We want a review and may even opt to cancel the agreement as the Selangor government appears not interested to proceed with the deal.
"Initially, we had agreed to sell raw water to Selangor at 10 sen per cubic metre but if Pakatan wins again in the coming general election, we would need to review the price.
"The agreed price earlier was with the Barisan Nasional-led state government and if Pakatan is taking charge, we may increase it to RM1 per cubic metre," he said after launching the Mini Maha programme in Dataran Bentong, here Sunday.
The event was also attended by Bentong MP and Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Minister Datuk Seri Noh Omar.
The water transfer project between both states would see 1,890 million litres of raw water being pumped daily from Sungai Semantan in Pahang to the Hulu Langat water treatment facility in Selangor.
The raw water supply to Selangor would generate an income of about RM70mil annually for the Pahang government at a price of 10 sen per cubic metre.
However, the rate is to be reviewed once every five years.
Adnan said the agreement was still binding but was upset the Opposition-led Selangor government was continuing to politicise the issue.
He said during earlier negotiations with former mentri besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, Pahang had agreed to lower the price from 15 sen to 10 sen per cubic metre in exchange for a share in the water treatment plant.
