Penang CM proposes naming Penang airport after P. Ramlee

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has proposed that the Penang International Airport be named after the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee.

He said the move was meant to recognise the contributions of the legendary artiste, considered the best of all time in the local entertainment industry.

"I will propose to the Federal Government that the Penang International Airport be renamed the Penang P. Ramlee International Airport.

"This is in recognition to his vast contributions to the entertainment industry.

"We are proud that the late P. Ramlee was born and received his early education here," he said in a press statement Sunday.

He said people of various ethnicities at the time had enabled P. Ramlee to realise his potential as an artiste.

"In view of his internationally-acclaimed stature, it is only apt that the Penang International Airport is named after him," he said.

P. Ramlee died of a heart attack on May 29, 1973, at the age of 44.
