Penang wants airport named after P. Ramlee
He said he would propose to the Federal Government that the airport be named Penang P. Ramlee International Airport.
“This is to recognise his vast contribution to the entertainment industry. We are proud the late P. Ramlee was born and received his early education here,” Lim said.
He added that whether as an actor, singer, songwriter, composer or producer, P. Ramlee was one of the best.
“He was once voted the best actor in Asia. In view of his internationally-acclaimed stature, it is only apt that the Penang International Airport be named after him,” Lim said.
P. Ramlee died of a heart attack on May 29, 1973, at the age of 44.
Lim lamented that the on-going RM250mil expansion and renovation work at the airport has left much to be desired.
He said problems included leaking whenever it rained heavily, poor worksmanship, delay in project completion and poor management, which caused inconvenience to the people.
Lim said the authorities received many complaints not only from passengers but also those working at shops in the airport.
“We hope the Federal Government will carry out weekly routine checks to identify any possible shortcomings,” he said.
