Election office updates voter status daily
JOHOR BARU: Changes to locality and address, and corrections to gender or religion are the enquiries that the state election office here receives on a daily basis.
Its director Rokiah Hanum Ibrahim said many voters were unaware that their records would only be updated when they inform the Election Commission (EC) after updating their addresses with the National Registration Department (NRD).
“This is not done automatically. Some people may move to a new place but return to their earlier voting constituency to cast their ballot,” she said, adding that this year alone they had received 1,093 complaints on various issues.
Rokiah said the changes to the voting locality or address could only be carried out following what the voter had in his or her MyKad.
“We check with the NRD before allowing any changes to be made.”
