RM2mil worth of ciggies, liquor found by 'accident'

Customs officers removing the liquor bottles from the lorry MALACCA: Contraband worth about RM2mil was accidentally discovered after a car rammed into a trailer and burst into flames near the Ayer Keroh toll plaza here early Monday.
Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Umar Ali Saifuddin Shaharuddin said the car was believed to have swerved and rammed into the rear of the trailer which was later found to be laden with illicit cigarettes and liquor.
He said investigation showed that the contraband goods were being transported to a location before being shipped to a neighbouring country.
The charred body of the car driver was retrieved at the site after the 6am accident. The driver of the trailer fled the scene.
Police officers carrying out investigations at the site of the accident Malacca Customs director Datuk Mohd Nasir Said said the illicit goods were valued at about RM2mil with unpaid tax cabout RM350,000.
He said his officers would carry out an investigation into the smuggling attempt.
