Vietnamese tourist breaks spine in jump to escape hotel fire


KUALA LUMPUR: A Vietnamese tourist is believed to have broken his spine after jumping from the first floor of a hotel during a fire in Jalan Changkat, Bukit Bintang, here Tuesday.

Do Thanh Trung, 24, had panicked and jumped through a rear window of the double-storey 10-room hotel at 7.10 am after learning of the fire.

Assistant Director (Operations) of the Kuala Lumpur Fire & Rescue Department, Azizan Ismail said none of the other seven guests and two employees at the hotel during the fire were injured.

He said Do could have just followed the others and safely walked out of the front door of the hotel.

"Our investigations revealed that the hotel had an adequate safety system in place," he told reporters at the scene.

Do has been admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Azizan said 31 firemen rushed over in four trucks from the Hang Tuah and Pudu fire & rescue stations within 10 minutes of being summoned at 7.14.

The fire destroyed a room of the hotel, he said adding that the cause of the fire and damage were being determined. - Bernama
