KUALA LUMPUR: It seemed like the tables have turned on the Ah Longs (loan sharks) when a borrower turned out to be a conman who cheated three different loan shark groups and disappeared with the money.

The matter came to light after IT specialist Thian Kah Haw received “warning letters” sent to his home earlier this month.

The letters warned him to pay back the money he allegedly owed them.

As he had never borrowed money from loan sharks, Thian ignored those letters only to return home on Sept 19 to find red paint splashed on the corridor walls of his apartment unit in Kinrara.

Distraught, the soon-to-be married 20-year-old lodged a police report at the Sri Petaling police station.

Further investigation by the authorities revealed that another man had borrowed money from the loan sharks but had given them a false home address.

The amount borrowed by him was not disclosed and his whereabouts still unknown.

Subsequently, Thian approached the MCA Complaints and Public Services Department for help.

Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong said he would leave the matter to the police.

“The loan sharks have apologised to Thian. Their efforts are now focused on finding the other man,” he said.

He said the condominium developer had also repainted Thian's wall for free.

Chong said that to date, he had seen 418 cases involving loan sharks amounting to RM28mil.
