PM: George Kent met conditions for LRT project

By NIK MAZWIN ANIS

KUALA LUMPUR: Construction firm George Kent was awarded the contract for the Ampang LRT line extension project after it passed technical, financial and legal evaluation, the Dewan Rakyat was told Thursday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the company was also able to meet conditions stipulated in the contract and had offered the second lowest price among eight bidders.

Najib, who is also Finance Minister, said the total value of the contract awarded to George Kent was RM1.084bil.

"The bidder which offered a price lower than the George Kent-Lion Pacific (GKLP) joint venture was not considered for the project as it did not fully abide by conditions in the contract.

"GKLP is a joint venture of local companies that has the financial ability and is listed on Bursa Malaysia.

"Therefore, assumptions that George Kent is inexperienced in the rail sector are inaccurate because the joint venture (company) has expertise in rail sub-system," he said in a written reply to Tony Pua (DAP-Petaling Jaya Utara).
