At The Dewan Rakyat

TEACHERS and education officers who do not meet the competency level will be sent for retraining, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin told the House.

He said the ministry would give extra focus in improving teaching professionalism, learning skills, knowledge and quality teaching as part of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025.

He said an integrated instrument (1Unified Instrument) was being developed to assess the competency level of all education officers and teachers nationwide.

Muhyiddin, who is also the Education Minister, said experts from the Institute of Teachers Education (IPG), Aminuddin Baki Institute (IAB), English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC) and various departments of the ministry would be used as facilitators to improve the professionalism led by the Teacher Training Division (BPG).

He told Mohd Nor Othman (BN-Hulu Terengganu) this during Question Time yesterday.

Mohd Nor had asked the ministry to state to what extent the Education Blueprint had used the Razak and Rahman Talib reports as the basis in its effort to increase unity among students.

Muhyiddin said the Education Blueprint was drafted based on the Razak Report (1956), Rahman Talib Report (1960) and Report of the Cabinet Committee to review implementation of the Education Policy also known as the Mahathir statement (1979).

He also noted that the public could still give their input and suggestions for the blueprint through the ministry’s open days at six zones nationwide between Oct 6 and 20.

He said the ministry had so far received feedback from various groups.

“Roundtable discussions with relevant bodies and groups will still be ongoing at the same time as the open day with the public,” he said.

He added that the consultation process and the audit from an independent panel, made up of international and local experts and panellists, would be made based on all suggestions received before the final report is finalised and tabled to the Cabinet in December.
