Ex-PKR woman wins suit against Harakah
GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang PKR Wanita chief Aminah Abdullah has won RM90,000 in a defamation suit against three PKR leaders over an article carried by PAS newsletter Harakah Daily.
A High Court here ordered current Penang PKR Wanita chief Norhayati Jaafar, Bukit Mertajam PKR division deputy chairman Jab Samat and Jelutong PKR division secretary Anuar Kamarudin to pay Aminah RM30,000 each in general damages over their statements quoted in the article.
The article, titled “Kenyataan Aminah bertentangan syariat” (Aminah’s statement opposes Islamic laws), was published in May last year.
Justice Varghese George Varughese said the court found that the defamatory statements made by the defendants were not fair comments because there is no truthful basis to them.
In her suit filed on June 15 last year, Aminah had sought RM1mil in damages from each defendant over the article which she claimed portrayed her as a person who was religiously ignorant, accepted bribes from Umno and resembled a circus lion, who acted on demand.
