Former Sabah assistant minister Wong Lien Tat seriously injured in accident

KOTA KINABALU: A former Sabah assistant minister has been warded in coma after his high-powered motorcycle skidded at Km74 Ranau- Telupid road about 170kms from here.

Datuk Wong Lien Tat, 74, remains in a coma at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital due to the injuries.

"He is still unconscious and we are told that he suffered concussions, we praying that he will recover,'' said Liberal Democratic Party secretary general Datuk Teoh Chee Kang on Friday.

According to family members of the former Karamunting assemblyman, Wong was riding back from here to Sandakan when the incident occurred at about 3pm on Thursday.

He was given initial treatment at a clinic in Telupid before being rushed to Ranau hopital and later to Queen Elizabeth Hospital at about 6pm.

Beluran police chief Deputy Supt V. Sivanathan said police were recording statments from witnesses.

Wong, a former LDP vice-president, served as an assistant minister at the chief minister's department between 1999 and 2008 before retiring.

In October 2010, Parti Bersatu Sabah's Batu Sapi MP Datuk Edmond Chong died when his motorcycle was involved in an accident here.
