Robber pities victim and takes only RM20

GEORGE TOWN: A robber took only a mobile phone and RM20 from his victim when she started to cry and beg for mercy at the junction of Perak Road and Macalister Road here.

Apparently the suspect, who was on a motorcycle, wanted to grab the Indonesian cleaner's handbag but relented when she broke down.

The suspect took only the woman's mobile phone and RM20 when she told him that she had only RM40 during the 7.30am incident yesterday.

The snatch thief then fled the scene but his escape was short-lived after he was nabbed by a police MPV unit which happened to be patrolling the area.

The police had spotted the victim, in her 30s, waving frantically and pointing in the direction which the suspect had taken off.

It is learnt that the victim was walking towards a private hospital nearby when the incident took place.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said investigations revealed that the suspect, who worked as a sailor, had three previous criminal records for drug-related offences and motorcycle theft.

The 26-year-old also tested positive for morphine.

“The case is being investigated under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery,” he said.
