BESUT: Felda will take on new roles, including partially funding the education of settlers' children, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced Thursday.

He said Felda would bear half the cost of education for settlers' children, who are currently being funded by the National Higher Education Corporation (PTPTN).

"It is in line with the goal of lessening the Government's burden.

"We will allocate RM15mil for the first year, RM30mil for next year and RM45mil the following year," he told reporters after attending a Hari Raya do at Padang Bola Kampung Tempinis, Tasik Tok Lebai here.

He also announced that skills training courses currently being offered to the children of Felda settlers would be opened to non-settlers as well.

"A total of 2,000 will be given the chance to undergo training, such as aircraft engineering under the MAS Training scheme and others as well.

"Such training is an added value, which will enable them to get good jobs in the future," he said.
