Cops question Samad Said and Maria Chin over ‘Janji Demokrasi’ rally

KUALA LUMPUR: National laureate Datuk A. Samad Said and Bersih member Maria Chin Abdullah had their statement recorded by police in connection with the incidents during the Janji Demokrasi' rally on Merdeka eve near Dataran Merdeka.

The duo who had been called by the police appeared at Dang Wangi police headquarters around 3pm on Thursday and were questioned by police for over an hour.

They were accompanied by social activist Hishamuddin Rais, Bersih co-chairman Datuk S. Ambiga and PKR legal adviser Latheefa Koya along with supporters.

On Wednesday, police had issued a notice under Section 111 of the Criminal Procedure Code to them to give their statements over the events.

Hishamuddin, who was also issued the notice along with PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, PKR vice-president and Batu MP Tian Chua and co-chairman of the Preservation of Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang committee Stanley Yong, said that they all would be having their statements recorded soon as well.

“We are currently arranging with our lawyers on the matter and will give our statements to the police soon,” he said.
