Only ruling coalition can ensure a civilised nation, says Najib

BESUT: The people should judge for themselves the act by some quarters who stomped on pictures of leaders and called for the Jalur Gemilang to be changed, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Describing such actions by several youths on Merdeka eve as “forsaking patriotism”, he said these could lead to the destruction of the fundamental values that the nation had based its success on.

“What will happen to the country's future if the King were to be disrespected, the Constitution forsaken and the law not abided by?

“Thus, the rakyat must give a firm mandate to Barisan Nasional,” he said during a Hari Raya gathering at Padang Kampung Tempinis, Tasik Tok Lebai here yesterday. “Only the Barisan Government can ensure a civilised and successful nation.”

The next general election, he reminded the crowd, would determine the country's future.

Later, at a press conference, Najib said he had no problems meeting the father of the 19-year-old student who was caught stomping and pulling down his pants at the Prime Minister's image.

“He can see me any time, but the law and sovereignty must be respected,” he said.

Najib was responding to a report which quoted the father from Batu Pahat as apologising for his son's actions. He hoped that the Prime Minister would forgive the teenager for what he did.

The father hoped that he could meet Najib to seek his forgive- ness personally.

Najib, who is Barisan chairman, also reminded leaders that “jostling for positions was meaningless”.

“It doesn't matter who the leader is. Barisan must win. We must show that we are united and not forsaking the party,” he said.

Both Barisan leaders and members, stressed Najib, should also focus on the elections and not let certain issues undermine their own principles.

“We must go all-out to erase the painful memory of losing four states (in 2008),” he said, expressing his confidence that Terengganu would remain in Barisan's hands.
