Jamil Khir: No Haj quota for states

JITRA: The government has set no quota for states on the number of pilgrims going to Mecca, but inclusion is on a first come-first served basis, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said on Saturday.

He said imposing a quota on states would cause many problems.

"The system we have is easy and practical. Whoever registers first, goes first, regardless of where he or she is from," he said.

Jamil Khir was asked to comment on a news report quoting the Sarawak Islamic Religious Council as being unhappy that Tabung Haji had reduced the quota for the state.

He was met after the opening of the Kedah-level course for Haj pilgrims by a member of the Kedah Council of Regency, Tan Sri Tunku Salehuddin Sultan Badlishah, at the Dewan Wawasan on Friday night.

Several newspapers in Sarawak had reported that the number of pilgrims from the state had been reduced from 1,000 to 800 and then to 600. - Bernama
