Speaker to decide soon on Labuan MP's bankruptcy status

KOTA KINABALU: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia said that the Insolvency Department had notified him of the bankruptcy status of Labuan MP Datuk Yussof Mahal, and he would make a decision soon on the matter.

He said he would have to decide whether to allow Yussof to attend the Dewan Rakyat sitting beginning Sept 24.

The Dewan Rakyat is scheduled to sit from Sept 24 to Nov 27 for the budget session.

Pandikar said he received confirmation from the Insolvency Department last month that Yussof had been declared a bankrupt and would look at the documents he had received from the department before making a decision.

"I have to go back to the office and look into all the things. Assuming that finally I decide he's not eligible to be an MP, then I will have to communicate with him and ask him not to attend the final session (of the Dewan Rakyat)," he told reporters at the Kota Kinabalu Umno Aidilfitri open house, here on Saturday.

On Aug 7, the Labuan High Court issued a notice of bankruptcy to Yussof, 56, though the amount owed was not revealed. The bankruptcy order stemmed from an application filed on May 24.

Yussof has said that efforts were underway to legally resolve the issue. - Bernama
