KUCHING: Tourism Deputy Minister Datuk Dr James Dawos has suggested that the state government take a more proactive approach to reel in big tourism spenders.

He said based on the ministry’s record last year, visitors from the Middle East were the biggest spenders, with Iranian tourists topping the league.

“Last year’s data showed that each adult Iranian visitor spent about RM7,000 during their holiday in Malaysia.

“The second biggest spenders are Saudi tourists,” he said at the launch of the Panchor hot springs in Serian near here yesterday.

Dawos, who is Mambong MP, said the Middle Eastern tourists to Malaysia allocated their holiday spending mostly on accommodation, followed by retail shopping, travel and entertainment.

He said Australians and Americans were also big spenders, pointing out that each adult from these countries spent about RM4,000 during their holiday in the country.

“The state should do something to further promote its products to Middle Eastern tourists. Unless you go there and tell them what you have to offer or bring them over here, they are not going to know much about us,” he stressed.
