Number of flood evacuees rise in Terengganu and Kelantan

KUALA LUMPUR: The second wave of floods has sent 1,524 people to evacuation centres in Terengganu and Kelantan, while Pahang saw a drop in the number of evacuees to 59 as at 9am Tuesday.

Terengganu had the most number of evacuees, at 1,489 and Kelantan had 35.

In Terengganu, the 1,489 evacuees are being accommodated at relief centres in Besut (569 evacuees), Dungun (57), Hulu Terengganu (701) and Kemaman (162), according to the state floods portal.

As of 9am, 27 relief centres had been opened in the state, with 13 in Besut, 10 in Hulu Terengganu and two each in Kemaman and Dungun.

The first wave of floods, which struck Terengganu on Dec 23, claimed six lives. In Kelantan, the 35 evacuees are from the Pasir Puteh district, according to the state government official portal.

Twenty people from Kampung Baru and Kampung Tok Sudin were moved to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kamil, Pasir Puteh, at 10pm Monday and 15 people from Kampung Gong Keding were sent to Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Awang, Pasir Puteh.

Heavy rain that has been lashing Kelantan since Monday caused the levels of several major rivers to rise, but they are still at the alert point.

Kelantan has an overcast sky with heavy rain now and then.

In Pahang the situation in flood-hit areas improved, with 59 evacuees at relief centres around Kuantan compared to 159 Monday.

The National Security Council portal reported that 50 evacuees from Kampung Seberang Balok were being accommodated at the Balok community hall and nine evacuees from Kampung Sungai Ular had been moved to Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Ular.

A stretch of the Jalan Kuantan-Bypass (after the Gebeng Fire Station) at Km18 remained closed to traffic. - Bernama
