Court fixes Jan 23 for Bekir’s defence
By MAIZATUL NAZLINA
KUALA LUMPUR: The Syariah High Court here Thursday fixed Jan 23 for Datuk Seri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib to file his defence in a RM121.36mil child support claim filed by his former wife Shahnaz A. Majid.
Syariah High Court registrar Halimatun Saadiah Mohd Mahdee set the date in chambers in the presence of plaintiff Shahnaz, 48, and her syarie counsels Dr Rafie Mohd Shafie and Akbardin Abdul Kader.
Dr Rafie told reporters the court recorded Bekir's explanation that he was unable to attend Thursday's proceedings as he was not in the country.
“The defendant Bekir needs to file his defence within two weeks failing which the court will proceed to fix the hearing date,” he said.
Bekir was represented by syarie counsels Datuk Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar and Saadiah Din.
On Nov 30, last year, Shahnaz had filed a RM121.36mil child support claim against Bekir.
Shahnaz said in her statement of claim that she and Mahmud were married on Jan 9, 1992 and divorced on May 11, 2011.
They have a son, Raden Murya, 19, who is studying in Britain.
She said that under the divorce order, the boy would be under her custody but there was no agreement on his maintenance.
She is claiming an education trust fund of RM40mil and a RM60mil terrace house in London.
