Some 1,000 police on duty at Batu Caves during Thaipusam

KUALA LUMPUR: One thousand police personnel will be on duty over a four-day period from Jan 24, to beef up security in Batu Caves during Thaipusam that falls on Jan 27.

Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said apart from the presence of police, devotees should also take preventive measures to ensure their safety.

For example, parents should keep the telephone numbers or address of their parents or family members in their pockets to help in cases such as when their children go missing in the crowd. This can ease the process of identifying or contacting them.

"People must also avoid leaving valuable items like laptop computers or hand phones inside their cars that are parked along the roadside," he told Bernama.

Those coming to Batu Caves should also avoid wearing sexy dresses to avoid any untoward incidents.

"Severe action will be taken against individuals or groups found consuming alcohol in the vicinity or carrying sharp objects or cause nuisance to public," he said.

Meanwhile, Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar Swamy Devasthanam Temple committee chairman Datuk R. Nadarajah believes there would be an increase in the number of visitors and devotees to Batu Caves this year.

Nadarajah said 1.5 million people are expected to throng Batu Caves this year in conjunction with Thaipusam, an important religious festival among Indians, where devotees pay homage and offer prayers to Lord Muruga. - Bernama
