JOHOR BARU: The state Veterinary Department has seized the male Rottweiler which mauled a three-year-old boy in Kulaijaya.

Its enforcement chief Tee Thian See said the dog was picked up by personnel from the Kulaijaya Municipal Council, who then handed it over to the department on Wednesday.

“The dog is now being kept at the department's clinic in Kebun Teh. Normally, in such cases, the animal will be placed at the clinic for at least two weeks to see whether it has rabies, which may have caused it to attack the boy,” he said yesterday.

“If the dog is later tested positive for rabies, we will inform the owner first before deciding on the next cause of action,” he said.

On Wednesday, Chok Thuan Seng had just returned home from a nursery school nearby in Taman Kulai Utama at about 5pm when the dog mauled him, injuring him on his neck and face.

The family maid ran out to pull the dog away and the boy was sent by his teacher to hospital.

Meanwhile, a relative, who declined to be named, said the boy was recovering well and is expected to be discharged from the Sultanah Aminah Hospital soon.

“He has started to eat porridge,” said the relative.
