Man arrested for helping fugitives

BUTTERWORTH: A 25-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly helping five of the seven fugitives, who escaped while being taken to the Butterworth court on Monday.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi said on Saturday that the man was in a car which was parked near the Al-Falah Mosque at Pangkalan Tambang in Permatang Pasir when police ambushed and caught him.

He said another man managed to flee during the 8pm incident on Friday.

“We believe the two of them were waiting for the five fugitives to come out from the jungle nearby. All of them are friends,” DCP Abdul Rahim said when contacted on Saturday.

Based on initial investigations, he said the suspect had offered mobile phones, food and financial help to the fugitives.

He added that the suspect had previously been investigated under Section 506 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation and committing mischief.

The five escapees still at large are Hissham Abdul Rahman, 39, Mohd Sharimy Nor, 28, Mohd Khairulnizam Abdul Rani, 26, Hamzani Abdul Rahman, 37, and Farid Akhtar, whose age is not known.
