Mohd Khairulnizam (left) being taken to Tasek Gelugor Police Station. BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police recaptured Mohd Khairulnizam Abdul Rani, 26, - one of the seven detainees who escaped Monday - at a cyber cafe in Berapit here about 1.15am on Sunday.
With his capture, only two more fugitives are at large.
"He was spotted by policemen at the cafe following a tip-off from the public," said Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.
DCP Abdul Rahim said police laid an ambush and caught him.
The fugitive had gone to his friend's house to borrow his motorcycle but, suspecting the friend was going to tip-off the police, grabbed the friend's son, Khairul Anas Mohd Fadli, 19, and made the youth sit in front of the motorcycle while he rode pillion with a parang to the boy's neck.
The youth was later found unharmed after he was ditched by the roadside in Kubang Semang here, DCP Abdul Rahim said.
Meanwhile, the three convicts who were recaptured after escaping from police on Monday, would be remanded for seven days, he said.
The hunt continues for two others - Hissham Abdul Rahman, 39, and Hamzani Abdul Rahman, 37.
On Monday, nine detainees, enroute to court, escaped from custody in a police van after assaulting their escorts.
However, two detainees were re-arrested near the van, which was found abandoned at Kampung Padang Chempedak here.
On Thursday, another two detainees were shot dead at Kampung Padang Ibu in Bukit Mertajam.
