GEORGE TOWN: Residents of an apartment block in Bukit Gambir here woke up to a commotion and found six cars destroyed in an early morning fire at their three-storey car park.

The cars damaged in the 5am incident at Taman Jade yesterday were a Honda City, a Perodua Myvi, a Proton Satria, a Proton Waja, a Proton Wira and a Proton Iswara.

According to sources, three of the cars belonged to members of the apartment’s management committee.

A resident who declined to be named noticed smoke billowing from the car park when he woke up to pray and called the Perak Road Fire and Rescue Department station.

A forensic team from the department discovered the presence of fuel believed to have been used to set the cars ablaze.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said nobody was injured in the incident.

“The case will be investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for arson,” he said.

It is understood that the building has CCTV cameras but not at the car park.
