Malaysia’s Societal Stress Index still under control

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia's societal stress rate is still under control and not a cause for concern said National Unity and Integration Department director-general Datuk Azman Amin Hassan.

The Societal Stress Index (SSI) which encompasses violence/riots; demonstrations/protests; attacks/fights and issues/conflicts showed not more than 25 cases per one million population per annum, from 2009 to 2012.

"In 2009, the SSI was at 21.6 cases but went up to 22.5 in 2010 before decreasing to 18.2 cases per one million population," he said at a press conference, here Monday.

Although, the index showed a slight increase to 19.2 cases for 2012 due to some demonstrations, it was still under control, he said.

"We find that the SSI increases during general elections and decreases after the Government has been formed as seen before the last one in 2008.

“So we expect the index to rise a little this year for the coming 13th General Election," he added.

He said the Government has taken various steps to control the situation to ensure Malaysia remains as the safest country in Southeast Asia, second in Asia after Japan and 20th in the world, out of 185 countries in the Global Peace Index. Bernama
