Paragraphs withdrawn from Anwar’s RM10mil suit

KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has withdrawn two paragraphs in his suit against Dr Chandra Muzaffar.
Anwar’s lawyer N. Surendran said his client had withdrawn the paragraphs as he believed it was Dr Chandra’s right under freedom of speech.
However, he said Dr Chandra has to justify his claim that Anwar allegedly said “he would make sure the temple bells would not ring in the country anymore”, in regards to the Kampung Jawa clash between the Hindus and Indian Muslims in Penang.
During the proceedings in chambers yesterday, Justice Nik Hasmat Nik Mohamad set April 3 and 4 for trial.
Surendran told reporters that the judge also ordered Anwar to pay RM1,000 in costs to Dr Chandra.
Dr Chandra’s lawyer Datuk Firoz Hussein Ahmad Jamaluddin said the judge recommended the two parties enter mediation in February, before resorting to a trial.
Anwar in his RM10mil suit claimed that Dr Chandra had falsely and maliciously spoken about his conduct at a forum at Menara Star which had been published by newspapers on March 5, 2008.
In his statement of defence, Dr Chandra had denied making defamatory comments against Anwar.
