KLANG: A 32-year-old man has been sentenced to a year in jail by a magistrate’s court here after he was caught beating his three-year-old stepson in a video that went viral on Face-book.

Motor workshop employee T. Rajasegaran had earlier admitted to battering the child with a rice ladle and a murukku mould at a house in Kapar, Klang, in September last year.

Prior to the sentencing, the boy’s 29-year-old mother was called to give a Victim Impact Statement on behalf of her son.

The mother, who spoke in Tamil, said she did not expect her husband to hit her child to that extent as he had only wanted to teach the boy a lesson for playing with a gas pipe. She also asked the court to mete out a lenient sentence.

Magistrate Ng Swee Wee said that although the intention to teach was good, Rajasegaran had used an inappropriate and extreme method. She also ordered for the jail time to run from the time of arrest.

According to the statement of facts, Raja-segaran had abused the boy — who is his second wife’s son from a previous relationship — at about 12.30pm in September last year.

Rajasegaran had slapped and kicked the boy and hit his head with the ladle and murukku mould. Medical examinations revealed old scars on his head, chest, hand, near the left eye and wrist.

It was reported that a more than eight minute-long video recording of Rajasegaran’s act went viral on the social networking site, sparking an uproar from the public.

Rajasegaran was arrested on Dec 11 last year after a police report was lodged. At the same court, Rajasegaran also claimed trial to a new charge of marrying the boy’s mother while still being married to his wife E. Citra, 21.

The offence was allegedly committed at a house in Kapar, Klang, at about 7.30pm on Dec 15, 2011.

Rajasegaran, who now faces a seven year imprisonment or fine upon conviction, was unrepresented. The case is set for mention on Feb 20.
