Peter Chin: Electricity bill exemption for low-income group to continue

By JOSEPH SIPALAN

PUTRAJAYA: The Government will continue to foot the bill of consumers using RM20 and below of electricity.

Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui said this is a continuation of the exemption for low-income groups, introduced in the 2009 Budget.

“Last year we spent RM146mil (on the exemption), which benefitted 1.1 million households, and this year we are doing it again,” he said after launching Tenaga Nasional Berhad's (TNB) national-level Customer Day here.

The exemption was given based on consumers' actual monthly bill.

In the first year of implementation, an average of RM11.95mil a month was spent to cover the cost of the exemption, which extended to 1.05 million consumers.
