US to increase number of English Teaching Assistants sent to Malaysia yearly

KUALA LUMPUR: The United States government will increase the number of English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) every year to promote people-to-people ties between Malaysia and the US, said US Ambassador to Malaysia Datuk Paul W. Jones.

He said relations between people was a good foundation for relations between countries.

"Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and President Barack Obama have agreed to bring our youths together.

"Besides helping teach English, the ETAs - who are mostly America's fresh graduates aged between 22 to 25 - also dress the Malaysian way and eat local food.

"With social media they also continue to interact with their Malaysian friends after their postings," Jones told a press conference after a dinner to welcome 75 American Fullbright ETAs at his residence here Friday night.
