Continuous downpour displaces 1,180 in Johor


JOHOR BARU: A total of 1,180 people were evacuated to flood relief centres in Johor following a continuous downpour since early Saturday morning.

The affected areas were Kampung Laut and Kampung Sungai Tiram in Johor Baharu, Kampung Baru Sungai Mas, Penawar; Taman Aman, Taman Mawai in Johor Lama; and PPMS Kampung Batu, Teluk Ramunia in Kota Tinggi.

They were housed in five centres located at SK Batu 10 and Balairaya Bt 18 Sungai Tiram, Johor Baharu; Dewan Kota Kecil, Dewan Kg Baru Sg Mas and Dewan Kampung Baru PPMS Teluk Ramunia in Kota Tinggi.

Kota Tinggi district officer Ismail Karim said they were prepared and expected further floods in the area based on Meteorological Department forecast.

"The flood waters started to recede as of 3 pm but the victims have not been allowed to go home because it's still raining," he told reporters.

Gelang Patah MCA chief, Jason Teoh said the division had distributed food and drinking water to the victims at Kampung Laut in the morning.

He added that Nusajaya assemblyman Datuk Aziz Sapian and Johor Baru district officer Amran A Rahman had also visited the victims.

Meanwhile, the Malaysian Drainage and Irrigation Department's portal publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my has advised the residents in Batu Pahat to be cautious as the water level in Sungai Lenik, Ladang Chaah has reached 5.79 metres, which was beyond the critical level. - Bernama
