JOHOR BARU: Two underage girls were among those detained in a three-hour joint operation in which more than 100 Mat Rempit were nabbed for illegal racing during a New Year celebration along Jalan Skudai near Danga Bay here.

Although the girls, aged 14 and 16, claimed that their parents knew that they were celebrating New Year with their friends, they refused to contact their family despite a request from the police.

“My father will have a heart attack if he finds out about this,” said the 14-year-old girl, whose pleas were however in vain as the police later contacted her parents.

Earlier, the illegal racers were rounded up during the operation, which began at 2am yesterday and was carried out jointly by the police, Rela and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD).

Johor traffic police chief Deputy Supt Roslan Ali said the Mat Rempit had turned Jalan Skudai into their racing track for stunts and other antics.

“Some of those detained are repeated offenders. They are not just putting their lives at risk but also the lives of other road users,” he said, adding that similar operations would be carried out from time to time to curb such unhealthy activities.
