Search underway for missing trekker in Gunung Benom
By ONG HAN SEAN
KUANTAN: A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway to track down a missing trekker at Gunung Benom, Raub.
Raub OCPD Supt Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman said the woman, Fong Ai Ting, 32, from Kuala Terengganu, had gone up the mountain with an expedition group of 19 people on Sunday.
He said the group reached the camp at the peak on Monday and came down on Tuesday morning after spending a night there.
"The group was moving down the mountain at about 9.30am. Half an hour later, they realised Fong was no longer with the group and believed she had lost her way," Supt Wan Mohd Samsudin told reporters here Wednesday.
He added that the group tried looking for Fong but could not find her and half of them came down at 10.30pm to ask for help from the authorities while the other half continued the search.
Supt Wan Mohd Samsudin said about 30 police personnel together with the Forestry Dapartment, Wildlife and National Parks Department as well as villagers had mounted a search and rescue operation since 8am Tuesday.
"Four canine units from the police and Fire and Rescue Department have also been mobilised while a helicopter is on the way now," he said, adding that the operation would go on until 7pm.
