Terengganu floods: 28 schools reopen; three to open Thursday
KUALA TERENGGANU: Three schools in Hulu Terengganu remain closed as they are still inundated by flood waters but the schools are expected to open Thursday.
State Education, Science and Technology and Human Resources Committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the schools were Sekolah Menengah Agama Mahmudiah, Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tengku Ampuan Intan and SK Bukit Tadok.
However, he said, the new school session at 28 other schools in Terengganu, which was postponed due to floods, started Wednesday.
"If the situation returns to normal, the three schools will begin their new session tomorrow," he told reporters after visiting a pupil with a heart problem at SK Wakaf Mempelam, here, on Wednesday.
Some 12,000 students were affected on the first day of the new school session in Terengganu following the closure of 31 schools, which was announced by the state Education Department due to the second wave of floods in the state.
Ahmad Razif said that the schools which were closed, must make a replacement on Saturday and parents could contact the schools or District Education office on the status of their children's school.
Meanwhile, a Bernama check at SK Tengku Ampuan Intan in Kuala Berang found 150 people comprising teachers and members of Rela, the school's Parent-Teacher Association, Civil Defence Department and Terengganu Community Development Agency in a gotong-royong to clean up the school from 8.30am.
Headmaster Mohd Hassan Deraman said the school management did not expect a flood when the new session was about to begin.
"This is the first time we could not open the school on the first day of the new session because previously, floods happened during the school holidays.
"Unfortunately, flood inundated the school once again at 3am on Tuesday, and the school had to be closed," he said.
In KOTA BARU, only Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK) Diniah in Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas, was closed due to flood.
Kelantan Education Department school management sector head Abdul Aziz Abdullah said four schools in Tumpat, which were closed Tuesday, would open from Thursday.
The schools are SK Simpangan, SK Bendang Pak Yong, SK Telok Jering and SABK Nurulhuda. - Bernama
