Nine families evacuated as floods hit Beluran

BELURAN: Nine families from two villages here have been evacuated after their homes were flooded on Sunday.

Eight of the families were from Kampung Kiabau, Telupid and another family from Kampung Sungai-Sungai in Sugut.

Telupid Assistant District Officer Benedict Asmat said 16 people from three of the families from Kampung Kiabau were sheltered at the village's multi-purpose hall while other families were temporarily staying with their relatives.

"The victims were evacuated after Sungai Kiabau rose rapidly and flooded their houses," he told Bernama after visiting flood victims at the Kampung Kabau Multi-Purpose Hall in Telupid, Monday.

He said the floods cut off main roads leading to Kampung Kiabau, Kampung Baba and Ansuan.

He said the Telupid Social Welfare Office distributed food, which was sent by boat to the victims Monday.

The Beluran District Office and the Telupid Sub-District Office have both set up flood operations rooms.

Four schools, namely Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Perancangan, SK Nangoh, SK Sungai-Sungai and SK Kiabau, were closed Monday. - Bernama
