12 Myanmar illegals found crammed into one car

KANGAR: Twelve Myanmar illegal immigrants were found crammed into one car during a check by the Anti-Smuggling Unit in Kuala Perlis, early Wednesday.

The unit's Perlis commander DSP Zakaria Abdul Rahman said following a tip-off, a team monitoring the Kampung Wai junction grew suspicious when a Proton Saga Aeroback car sped off when flagged down, in the 1.30am incident.

The overloaded car was finally stopped in Taman Peladang, near Kuala Perlis and the team found the 12 Myanmar illegals in it.

They and the 22-year-old local driver of the car were arrested and taken to the unit's base in Kuala Perlis for further investigation.

Zakaria said the initial investigation showed that the illegals were to be taken to a location in Penang and the local man was paid RM150 per trip.

He said after the arrest, they received another tip-off and arrested 11 Myanmar men at a hill in Kampung Wai, near the Malaysia-Thailand border about 4am.

He said all the 23 illegals detained in the two cases were aged between eight and 25 years and had left Myanmar on Jan 4. - Bernama
