Maid jailed for killing dog

KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian maid has been sentenced to 12 months’ jail by a magistrate’s court here after she admitted killing her employer’s family dog.

Heltija Bulu, 26, admitted killing the Yorkshire terrier, worth about RM3,000, which belonged to her employer’s niece Teh Kelly, 17.

The offence took place at a home in Sri Hartamas on Jan 10.

She was charged with committing mischief by killing or maiming an animal under Section 429 of the Penal Code.

According to the facts of the case, Heltija had called her employer, pub manager Yeoh Suzie, 51, on the day of the incident, telling her that her dog had died suddenly.

Yeoh, however, discovered house CCTV footage showing Heltija hitting the dog before tossing it into a corner of the toilet.

Confronted with the video evidence, Heltija confessed, although she would not reveal why she killed the dog.

Examination showed the dog died from shock due to abuse involving a blunt object.

Heltija pleaded for a lenient sentence before magistrate Nur Azura Murah while prosecuting officer Muhamad Sapri Yaakub pressed for a heavy sentence to “teach her a lesson”.

“Animals should be taken care of with love. What the accused did was cruel and inhumane,” he submitted.
