MIRI: The names of proposed SUPP candidates for the general election seem to have received the blessing of Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin (pic) said the Prime Minister had not raised any objection to the list of names submitted by the party’s central leadership.

Chin, who is Miri MP and Energy, Green Technology and Water Minister, told The Star yesterday that Najib had met personally with the president of several Barisan component parties.

“The Prime Minister, in his capacity as the Barisan coalition chairman, has the final say on the candidates who will represent Barisan in the general election.

“Najib is personally meeting with presidents of several component parties that are having problems and issues concerning their proposed candidates.

“I have already submitted the names of those candidates whom we (SUPP) will field in the parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak a few months ago.

“We will not make any more changes.

“Since the Prime Minister has not summoned me for any meeting or raised any objection to the names we proposed, I will take that as a sign that he is satisfied with our proposed candidates,” he said after presenting financial aid to students from various primary and secondary schools here.

He said Najib would be coming here on Feb 20 to meet Barisan leaders to discuss the final preparations for the polls.

“There will be a big gathering to meet the rakyat here as well. He will also attend a Chinese New Year gathering where he will deliver an important speech to the people.

“That will be the last visit by the Prime Minister to Miri before the general election is called,” Chin said.
