KUALA LUMPUR: PAS sacked its former deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa due to its uneasiness over the success of Umno in uniting the Muslims, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Whatever their (PAS Syura Council) decision was based on, the timing created a perception that it was done due to his visit to Gaza,” he told reporters this after attending the Youth Action Forum 2013 here.

He noted that PAS felt uncomfortable and threatened by the success achieved by the Government, in particular Umno, in uniting Muslims while upholding Islam.

He added that it was unfortunate that action was taken against Nasharudin, whose visit to Gaza was driven by his personal desire for Muslim unity while upholding Islam.

On Sunday PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat announced that the council had at its meeting on Jan 13 sacked Nasharudin.

The decision was due to several factors, including violation of the council's decision, going against the party's stand and failure to attend council meetings.

Nasharudin was part of the prime minister's group that visited Gaza last week.

Najib brushed aside criticism made by certain quarters on his Gaza trip, saying it was a historic occasion for the country which supported the Palestinian cause.

He noted that this was oppose to the overall sense of appreciation felt by the entire nation at the role Malaysia is playing in helping the Palestinians.
