Mohd Puad: Two schools still closed due to floods

HULU TERENGGANU: Sekolah Agama Bantuan Kerajaan (SABK) Diniah in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampung Besut, Setiu in Terengganu are the only two schools which remain closed until now as they are still inundated by floodwaters.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said based on the latest reports received, no schools remained as flood relief centres in Terengganu now while in Kelantan, only one school, SK Bukit Awang was still being as a relief centre.

"However, the new school session at SK Bukit Awang goes on as usual as only 15 flood evacuees are still housed at the school.

"The flood waters for most affected parts in the country have subsided and we are grateful that overall, the new school session is not that badly affected by the floods as the disaster started during the school holidays," he said during his visit to SK Tengku Ampuan Intan, Thursday.

SK Tengku Ampuan Intan, Sekolah Menengah Agama Mahmudiah and SK Bukit Tadok in Hulu Terengganu were among the schools that started the new school session Thursday after being closed for two days due to the floods.

On the giving of schooling aid of RM100, Mohd Puad said it would be distributed from Jan 15 until February.

"Besides students of government-aided schools, those from capital-aided schools, sekolah agama rakyat and private schools will also receive the aid," he added.

The aid, given to all primary and secondary school students regardless of their family income, was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2013 Budget last September. - Bernama
