GEORGE TOWN: A member of the Voluntary Patrol Unit (PPS) has apologised to a journalist whom he confessed to have attacked while the latter was covering an apparent suicide case last week.

However, Lim Ah Chai (pic) still have to face the law.

Lim, 52, looked visibly disturbed while making the apology at a press conference in Datuk Keramat assemblyman Jagdeep Singh Deo's service centre here.

He offered to give an angpow (red packet containing money) to Guang Ming Daily deputy crime chief Ang Kean Siang, 32, as a token of apology but the latter was not present.

It was reported that Ang suffered injuries to his lips, chest, abdomen and groin after he was allegedly punched and kicked by two PPS members at the unit's makeshift operations centre in Perak Lane on Sunday morning.

Lim, a paint shop worker, who joined the unit less that a year ago, confessed that he had acted recklessly that night and did not know that Ang was a reporter covering the case.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said the deputy public prosecutor has decided to charge Lim under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief and damage.

He said Lim would be charged on Friday.

“The police are looking for another person whom we have identified and is currently at large,” he said when contacted.
