Official: Technical glitch caused error in DAP election results
Zairil Khir Johari in CEC after tabulation errors discovered
PETALING JAYA: A technical error in calculations during party elections at the 16th DAP National Congress on Dec 15 resulted in an inaccurate result of the positions in the Central Executive Commitee (CEC).
Portal RoketKini.com reported Thursday that the error was unlikely to greatly affect the 20 top positions of the CEC.
In an interesting turn of events, candidate number 65, Zairil Khir Johari, who initially had the same number of votes received by candidate number 35, Manogaran Marimuthu (305 votes), actually received 803 votes.
This put him in the 20th position, which means he is automatically appointed to the CEC.
Candidate number 63, Wu Him Ven, who was initially in the CEC with 1,202 votes, actually received 669 votes and is in 26th position, putting him out of the committee.
"Incredible turn of events. Am still shocked myself," Zairil tweeted late Thursday.
Returing officer Pooi Weng Keong, who was responsible for making the final calculations and presenting the results to the party congress, said the error occurred when transferring the results calculated using Microsoft Excel.
"As a result of the error, the number of votes for candidates numbered 31 to 38 are the same as candidates numbered 61 to 68," he said.
He added that the mistake was not noticed by his side until the next day and was reported to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
According to the portal, DAP viewed the mistake seriously and has ordered for an internal audit, led by Dr Ong Kian Ming, to investigate the error.
Dr Ong is the newest member of DAP that acted as an observer during the party's congress and did not vote as well as play any role in the calculation of votes.
