MIRI: The first day of the new school year proved to be a heart-wrenching one for a family in Kuala Baram near here.
A father found the body of his 14-year-old son hanging from a rope attached to the curtain railing in his room at around noon yesterday.
The Form Two student is believed to have committed suicide but the reason has yet to be determined.
He was supposed to be preparing for school in Senadin at his home in Desa Indah, some 20km north of the city.
Miri police chief ACP Mun Kock Keong confirmed that police had classified the case as sudden death but a post-mortem would be carried out.
“Yes, the 14-year-old is a Form Two student. He was found dead inside his house.
“For now, we (police) have classified the case as sudden death due to suspected suicide,” he said yesterday.
“However, the body will be required to undergo post-mortem. We are investigating the case thoroughly to find out what exactly happened in the house.
“We are taking statements from the family and the case is still under investigation,” ACP Mun said.
The deceased was the second eldest in the family.
A patrol car rushed to the house yesterday after receiving a call from the father.
“The father had told the boy to get ready for school in the morning.
“He waited for the boy to come out from the room but to no avail. The father knocked on the door of the room repeatedly and when the boy did not come out after a long time, he opened the door and found his son hanging near the window,” a family member told policemen at the scene.
By the time police arrived, the boy was already dead.
This is believed to be the second suicide case in the city in as many days since the start of the new year.
On Jan 1, a middle-aged man was found dead on the ground floor of a three-storey shophouse.
He is believed to have fallen from the very top floor of a window in his rented room.
ACP Mun yesterday said the man was partially handicapped.
“That case is also suspected to be suicide but we are still investigating in detail.”
On the case of a youth believed to have been killed during a fight in a commercial centre in the early hours of Jan 1, he said police were also investigating the case and had classified it as suspected murder.
