Five years’ jail for couple who abused child
PETALING JAYA: The Magistrate's Court sentenced a husband and wife to five years' jail for abusing a two-year-old child, three months ago here Wednesday.
Magistrate K B Elena Hong Tze Lan sentenced Mohd Nasir Abd Majid, 37, a lorry driver and his wife Zarinah Ab Hadhy, 31, a housewife after both admitted to committing the offence at an apartment in Damansara Damai, between Oct 14 to Oct 27, 2012.
K B Elena ordered the sentence to be carried out effective the date they were arrested, Dec 18, 2012.
The couple were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children Act 2001 which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or RM20,000 fine or both, if convicted.
The Prosecution led by DPP Saphirra Selamat had urged the court to mete out a deterrent sentence to the couple since their act was a serious offence.
According to the facts of the case, the victim was sent to the Sungai Buloh Hospital purportedly for a convulse disorder but the doctor who attended to the victim found internal bleeding in the child's brain and a fracture on the skull.
There were also swelling and burn marks on the child's body. - Bernama
