JOHOR BARU: A construction worker was stunned when he dug up a live bomb thinking it was scrap metal that he could sell.

Tay Kim Peng, 36, who took a month off from work due to an injured arm, was looking for scrap metal on an empty plot near his house in Kampung Semangat, next to Taman Bukit Mewah in Skudai here, at around 11am last week.

“I saw the tip of the object sticking out from the ground and dug it up thinking that the scrap metal could fetch a high price.

“Only when I got it out did I realise that it looked like a bomb as it was about one foot long and heavy,” he said yesterday.

Johor Baru (North) OCPD Asst Comm Ruslan Hassan said the police received a call about the bomb at around 12.50pm.

“The object was a live 105mm shell believed to be from the Japanese Occupation,” he said.

“Our bomb unit destroyed it at the Maju Jaya river in Kempas at around 3pm yesterday.”
