MCA: Foreign workers must also bear other costs

KUALA LUMPUR: It must come as a relief to industries that levy is to be borne by foreign workers instead of employers with immediate effect, says Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek.

The MCA president, in welcoming the Cabinet decision, however, said the foreigners should also bear transportation and housing costs under the minimum wage policy, and that the party would continue to pursue this.

“Shifting the levy to the foreign workers alone is not enough,” he said.

Dr Chua said their transportation and housing costs could come up to quite a sum, and this had resulted in foreign workers getting a better deal than the locals.

This had caused a lot of dissatisfaction among the local workers, he added.

“We (MCA) have no problems with minimum wage for local workers,” he stressed.

Dr Chua said the MCA had proposed to the Human Resources Ministry last month that foreign workers pay their own levy, transport and housing costs as a way of easing the burden on industries following the implementation of the minimum wage policy.
