ALOR SETAR: Barisan Nasional needs a strong mandate in the coming general election so that economic and political transformation policies can bear fruit, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the next five years would be crucial for the government to bring the changes needed for the country.

“The people must understand that we make plans and ensure the development of certain sectors and when this sector contributes to the country's economic development, the people will benefit,” he said.

Najib said the Barisan government's philosophy has been to share the prosperity with the people but the opposition had never understood this.

Najib said this in his speech upon arriving at the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport here for a one-day working visit to the state.

”When we have big investment, the government coffers also increase, thus we give Bantuan Rakyat 1Malaysia (BR1M) aid to school going children, youth and university students.

“We can give more than that in future as long as we are given a stronger mandate,” he said.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to officiate the "Himpunan Orang Muda Negeri Kedah" at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium.

The gathering is expected to attract about 50,000 youths from various political parties, youth organisations, students, non-governmental organisations and the silat fraternity.
