DAP’s election director resigns
By CHRISTOPHER TAN
GEORGE TOWN: Pooi Weng Keong has resigned from his position as DAP election director following the error in the tabulation of votes during the recent party election.
DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Friday that Pooi also stepped down as Federal Territory DAP committee member.
He said Pooi admitted his mistake and bore full responsibility for the error which reportedly resulted in candidates who had clinched the 31st to 38th positions and those who had clinched the 61st to 68th positions being given the same number of votes.
Lim thanked the party's central executive committee (CEC) for adopting his recommendation to announce the corrected results even if it subjected the party to negative publicity.
“We have to tell the truth. We are not going to live a lie. This party will not live a lie. This (the corrected result) should be revealed.
“We have appointed an internal auditing team led by Dr Ong Kian Ming and appointed an independent external auditor to verify the results,” he said after witnessing the swearing-in of Penang municipal councillors at the City hall here Friday.
Lim, who is also Penang Chief Minister, said the DAP would want an accounting firm to handle the party's election in future to avoid any problem.
It was reported Friday that Zairil Khir Johari, who was initially in 39th position, had now been bumped up to 20 - earning the last elected position in the CEC.
Zairil, who was was earlier said to have garnered 305 votes, had actually gained 803 votes, putting him in 20th position.
Vincent Wu, who was initially announced to have secured the sixth spot with 1,202 votes, has dropped to the 26th spot as the party claimed he had actually clinched only 669 votes.
