KUANTAN: The public should not blame the Government whenever a disaster occurs, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, referring to the recent floods.

He said that there were other factors which caused floods, namely the monsoon season, and global warming which was a worldwide phenomenon.

“Floods are not unusual in Malaysia as the monsoon brings heavy rain and strong winds and another factor is global warming and climate change.

“Weather experts say there will be heavier rains than usual,” the Prime Minister said when giving out financial aid to flood victims here yesterday.

Tackling global warming and climate change requires global effort, said Najib, adding that the authorities would manage the floods as best as they could.

Up to 686 families affected by the Dec 24 floods in Kuantan received RM500 each during the ceremony. Najib said that the special payment would be followed by other forms of aid.

Meanwhile, Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and Tengku Puan Pahang Tengku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Sultan Iskandar took part in a gotong-royong programme to clean up Sekolah Agama Rakyat Al-Amin in Kampung Seri Damai here which was affected by the floods.

Rosmah, who is the Girl Guides Association of Malaysia president, and 250 Pahang branch members painted the school and planted trees.
